Leadership Strategies: Do Your Leadership Skills Measure Up to Success for You?
I think the myth that people are born leaders has hopefully died a well justified death. Anyone can be or can learn to be a leader. And every business owner must be a leader to succeed.
Let’s take a look at the skills you need to fully develop for effective leadership. As a leader you must: be a good communicator, be able to motivate yourself and others, be able to mentor others to achieve more of their potential, you must be decisive, be determined, and you must be effective at planning and reaching your goals. Nearly everyone already has these skills at some level and nearly everyone has room to improve or sharpen those skills.
Communication can be one of the most difficult of those skills to develop. Most people think they are a great communicator when in fact they aren’t. Communication isn’t about talking it’s about listening for understanding, so if you don’t understand those around you or they don’t understand you chalk it up to poor communication skills.
Motivation is pivotal to your success. You can’t motivate others you can only help them to motivate themselves. And you can’t do that if you don’t know how to effectively motivate yourself so you take consistent action toward the achievement of your goals.
Bottom line leadership is about getting results from yourself and through others. Here again if you can’t walk the walk the people you’re leading will see right through you and it will be nearly impossible for you to get the results you want from them. Your leadership skills enable you to help other people reach more of their potential so they have the ability to get results for themselves and you.
Indecisiveness is a leadership and a success killer. Make your decisions quickly based on their alignment with your goals and plans. Then stick with your decisions.
As a leader you must develop plans for where you want to be and how you’re going to get there. Your plans aren’t complete until you have them broken down into the specific goals you must accomplish by taking certain actions. If you don’t have your goals broken down into the specific actions you’ll take by when they aren’t really goals they’re just wishes or pipe dreams.
You know other business owners who try to build a successful business based on pipe dreams. These are the people who spend inordinate amounts of time learning every detail about things or they waste away all day every day fighting fires rather than figuring out how to put them out. They are the people who talk big and have little or no action to back up all that talk. They are always “gonna” do something, but somehow they never actually do much of anything except running their mouth. And when things start to fall apart for them, as they will, it is always someone or something else’s fault.
Ultimately leaders have determination. Things won’t always go right there will be challenges and things getting in your way, but as the leader you have to just put your nose down and figure out a way around anything that gets in your way. In spite of already getting seven “no’s” you continue to ask because of your determination to succeed no matter what.
